Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. Put on safety glasses and hearing protection: the air comes out fast and loud.

  2. Run the compressor until it stops by itself at full pressure.

  3. Pull the safety valve's ring for a second: air should hiss out. Let go, and it should snap shut and go quiet.

Keep your face and hands clear of the valve's opening.
  4. Turn the compressor off at its switch and unplug it.

  5. Let the air out through the hose until the tank gauge reads low.

  6. Open the drain under the tank slowly and let the rusty water run into a pan. Tip the tank a little to empty it.

Point the drain away from your face and feet.
  7. When only air comes out, close the drain hand-tight. Drain it after every use.

  8. A safety valve that won't let air out or won't stop hissing, or rust holes in the tank: don't use it. Ask Handyman for a tool repair pro.
