  1. Read the letters and numbers on the machine's display exactly, with any dashes or dots.

  2. Take a photo of the display before it changes, or before anyone resets it.

  3. On a furnace, look through the small window low on its front for a blinking light. Leave the panel on.

Smell gas? Don't look further. Leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
  4. Count the blinks between pauses, a few times over. Note long or short, and the colour.

  5. Write the code with the machine's model, and when it happened.

  6. Don't reset it again and again. A code that keeps coming back: send it to Handyman, who'll find the right pro.

What you need

  • Your phone
  • A pen and paper

Call a pro if

  • The code comes back after a reset
  • The machine won't run
  • The furnace light blinks and there's no heat

Handyman says: Send me the code. I'll find a pro.

Free for every home. Handyman asks a few questions, then books a pro it trusts.
