Take everything out of the drum. A cleaning cycle runs empty.
Put a washer cleaner tablet, or the amount the bottle says, into the drum unless its label says the dispenser.
Never mix cleaners, and never add bleach to another cleaner.Pick the clean or tub-clean cycle, or the hottest, longest one, and start it.
On a front-loader, fold back the rubber seal and wipe out the grime, hair and water caught in it.
Pull out the detergent drawer, rinse it in warm water and brush out the slot it sits in.
After every wash, leave the door and the drawer open a little, so it dries and stays fresh.
A smell that comes back, black spots in the seal that won't wipe off, or water left in the drum: ask Handyman for an appliance repair pro.
