Unplug it, or switch off its breaker.
If it just ran a hot wash, let the water inside cool first.Open the small door at the bottom front corner. Lay towels down and set a shallow tray under it.
Pull out the short drain hose, take its cap off over the tray and let the water run out. Cap it while you empty the tray, and repeat.
There can be more water than you think: keep towels ready.Turn the round filter counterclockwise, slowly, and pull it out. The last of the water comes with it.
Pick out coins, lint and hair, and rinse the filter under the tap. Clear anything you can see in the opening.
Screw the filter back in clockwise until it's tight, cap the little hose and close the door.
Plug the washer in and run a rinse and spin. Check the small door for drips.
Water that still won't drain, a leak at the filter, or a pump that hums or grinds: ask Handyman for an appliance repair pro.
