Hook up a washer and an electric dryer

Connect a washer's hoses and drain, and an electric dryer's metal duct and plug. A gas dryer's hookup is always a licensed pro's.

Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. Turn the hot and the cold tap on the wall clockwise until they stop.

  2. Check each braided hose has its rubber washer, then screw it on by hand, hot to hot and cold to cold, and a quarter turn more with pliers.

  3. Hook the drain hose into the standpipe and strap it there so it can't jump out.

  4. Plug the washer into its outlet and level it with its feet.

  5. Open both taps slowly and look at every hose end for drips. Then run a short rinse.

  6. Fit a metal dryer duct from the dryer's outlet to the pipe in the wall, short and straight, with a clamp at each end.

Never a plastic or foil duct.
  7. An electric dryer has a big plug. It should fit the wall outlet exactly: never force it or use an adapter.

  8. Push it back without crushing the duct, run it, and check air pushes out at the outside hood.

  9. A gas dryer, a plug that doesn't fit the outlet, or no outlet at all: ask Handyman for a licensed pro. A gas hookup is never a DIY job.
