In the yard, look for a pipe standing a little out of the ground with a cap on top, often near the house.
The cap should sit snug and bolted down, with no gaps or cracks.
Look at the vent under the cap's edge: its screen should be whole, with no way in for insects or mice.
The ground should slope down away from the casing, with no hollow or puddle round it.
Keep mulch, snow piles, firewood and the mower away from it, and never bury it.
Keep fuel, fertilizer and weed killer well away from the well.A cracked or missing cap, a loose casing, or water pooling round it: drink bottled water and ask Handyman for a well pro.
