DIY guideWater heater
Check the water heater's seismic straps
Make sure the water heater can't tip in an earthquake: two snug straps fastened to the wall's studs, and flexible pipes on top.

Look for two metal straps round the tank: one in its top third, one in its bottom third.
Push the tank gently. It shouldn't rock or move. A strap you can slide a hand under is loose.
Each strap's ends should be screwed into the wall's studs with big screws, not into the drywall alone.
Most straps tighten with a bolt or a buckle at the front. Snug it until the tank can't rock.
The water pipes on top should be bendable connectors, so they flex instead of snapping if the tank moves.
No straps, straps on drywall only, or stiff pipes on top: ask Handyman for a plumber to fit them.
What you need
- A flashlight
- A wrench or a screwdriver, for the strap's bolt
Call a pro if
- There are no straps, or only one
- The straps are fastened to drywall only
- The pipes on top are stiff, not bendable
- The tank rocks after snugging the straps

Handyman says: No straps? I'll find a plumber.
