DIY guideDryer

Clean the whole dryer duct with a brush kit

Run a rotary brush through the duct from the dryer to the outside vent, so lint can't build up where you can't see it.

  1. Unplug the dryer and slide it out from the wall.

If the dryer runs on gas, move it gently and don't disconnect or kink the gas line.
  2. Loosen the clamps and slide the duct off the dryer's outlet and off the pipe in the wall.

  3. Push the rotary brush into the duct, spin it with the drill, and work it through to the outside vent a rod at a time.

Keep the drill slow and turning clockwise, so the rods can't unscrew inside the duct.
  4. Pull the lint out of the hood outside and make sure its flap swings freely.

  5. Vacuum the dryer's outlet, refit the duct and its clamps, and push the dryer back without crushing the duct.

  6. Run the dryer on air only and check that the flap outside opens and air pushes out strongly.

  7. A run longer than your rods, a duct that goes up through the roof, or one that's crushed or plastic inside a wall: ask Handyman for a dryer vent cleaner.

What you need

  • A dryer vent brush kit with rods
  • A drill
  • A vacuum with a hose
  • A screwdriver, for the clamps

Call a pro if

  • The duct runs up to the roof or far through the walls
  • It's crushed, or plastic or foil inside a wall
  • Clothes still take more than one cycle to dry

Handyman says: That run needs a pro. I'll book one.

Free for every home. Handyman asks a few questions, then books a pro it trusts.
