  1. Look inside at the top or the back, behind the grille at the bottom front, or on the line at the back. The manual or the old filter shows which one to buy.

  2. Turn it a quarter turn to the left and pull it straight out. Some have a button to press first.

Hold a towel under it: a little water spills.
  3. Unwrap the new filter and take off its protective cap.

  4. Line it up the way the old one sat, push it in and turn it a quarter turn to the right until it stops.

  5. Run the water dispenser into a jug for as long as the filter's box says, and pour it away. It clears the air and loose carbon.

  6. Hold the filter or reset button until the light changes. The manual says which button.

  7. A drip round the filter that won't stop once it's pushed home, or no water at all: close the fridge's water valve and ask Handyman for an appliance repair pro.

What you need

  • The filter your fridge takes (its model is on the old filter or inside the door)
  • A towel
  • A jug or a large pot

Call a pro if

  • It drips round the filter once it's pushed home
  • No water comes out with the new filter in
  • The water or ice still tastes or smells off
