  1. Move furniture back, lay a towel along the baseboard, and dust the wall with a dry cloth or mop.

  2. Fill one bucket with warm water and a little dish soap, and a second with clean water for rinsing.

  3. Wash a small spot behind a door first. If the paint goes shiny or rubs off, wash gently with water only.

  4. Wring the sponge out well and work up from the bottom. Drips on clean wall wipe off; on dirty wall they streak.

Keep the sponge away from outlets and switches.
  5. Rub scuffs by the switches and grease by the stove gently with the soapy sponge. Don't scrub hard.

  6. Wipe each section with the clean water, then dry it with a towel.

  7. Stains that bleed back through, brown water marks, peeling paint or dark spots that spread: ask Handyman for a painter, or a plumber first for a leak.
