Look behind the toilet, low on the wall or floor. The valve sits where the water line comes in.
Turn the handle clockwise until it stops. Hand-tight is enough.
Don't force it with pliers. An old valve can crack.Flush once to empty the tank. If it refills, the valve isn't fully closed.
If the handle won't turn or water leaks at the stem, stop. Turn off the main water and ask Handyman for a pro.
What you need
- A towel for drips
Call a pro if
- The handle won't turn, or water leaks at the stem
- The tank keeps filling after the valve is closed

Handyman says: Turn off the main. I'll find a plumber.
Free for every home. Handyman asks a few questions, then books a pro it trusts.
