Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. After a rain, look from the ground for drips at the seams and for sags where a hanger has let go.

  2. Stand the ladder on firm, level ground, its foot out one step for every four steps up, resting on the wall rather than the gutter.

Single storey only. Keep your hips between the rails, and never step onto the roof.
  3. Scrape out the old sealant and scrub the joint clean, then let it dry.

  4. Run a bead of gutter sealant along the joint inside the gutter, and smooth it so the water runs over it.

  5. Where a hanger is loose, drive a new, longer screw through it into the wood behind the gutter.

  6. Once the sealant has set, run a hose in the gutter and watch the seams from the ground.

  7. A gutter above one storey, a sag the hangers won't hold, or soft wood behind it: ask Handyman for a gutter pro.
