Tap a step to watch it again.
Stand the ladder on firm, level ground, its foot out one step for every four steps up, resting on the wall rather than the gutter.
Single storey only. Keep your hips between the rails, and never step onto the roof.Wearing gloves, scoop the leaves and muck into a bucket, working toward the downspout.
Climb down and move the ladder along instead of reaching out to the side.If there are guards, lift a section, clear what has built up under it, and clip it back.
Run a garden hose along the gutter toward the downspout and watch the water drain away.
If water backs up, flush the downspout from the bottom with the hose, or tap along it to loosen the clog.
A second storey, a steep roof, or a gutter you'd have to step onto the roof to reach is a pro's job. Ask Handyman for a gutter cleaner.
What you need
- A sturdy ladder
- Work gloves
- A bucket with a hook, or a gutter scoop
- A garden hose
Call a pro if
- The gutters are above one storey
- The roof is steep or the ground is uneven
- The gutter sags, leaks at its seams, or pulls away

Handyman says: Above one storey? I'll book a pro.
Free for every home. Handyman asks a few questions, then books a pro it trusts.

a pro do it?
