7 steps

Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. Plug each string in on the ground and look for broken bulbs, cracked sockets and cut or chewed cords. Throw out bad ones.

  2. Use lights and cords made for outdoor use. Indoor ones aren't made for rain and cold.

  3. Plug into an outdoor GFCI outlet with a cover, never through a window. Join no more strings than the box says.

  4. Set the ladder on firm, level ground, with someone holding it. Keep your belly between the rails.

A single storey only, and well away from the power line to the house.
  5. Hang the lights with plastic clips on the gutter or the shingle edge. Nails and staples cut the cord.

  6. Plug in through an outdoor timer, so they're off overnight and while you're away.

  7. Above one storey, a steep roof, or near the power line: ask Handyman for a pro to hang them.

Never step onto the roof to hang lights.
