Epoxy a garage floor: what's involved

What’s involved

No hands-on steps here: what the job is, what a pro does, and what to have ready.

  1. An epoxy coat seals the garage's concrete against oil, salt and water, and makes it easy to sweep clean.

  2. Look for oil stains, cracks, flaking from an old coating, and dark damp patches.

  3. Tape a square of plastic flat on the floor and leave it overnight. Drops or a dark patch under it mean damp comes up through.

  4. They grind or etch the concrete, fill the cracks, then lay a primer, a colour coat and a clear top coat over a few days.

The etch and the coatings give off strong fumes, so the garage is aired and kept empty.
  5. Empty the garage, plan to park outside while it cures, and choose a colour and finish.

  6. Damp coming up, wide cracks or a floor that's sunk: ask Handyman for a concrete pro before anyone coats it.
