Tap a step to watch it again.
Move cars, bikes and boxes out of the door's way, and keep children and pets well back.
Lay a short piece of wood flat on the floor in the middle of the doorway, where the door comes down.
Press the wall button to close the door. When it touches the board, it should stop and go back up.
Stand clear and keep a finger by the button, so you can stop it.Open the door, start it closing, then pass a broom handle between the two small sensors low on either side. It should stop and go back up.
If it closes on the board or ignores the broom, don't use the opener. Ask Handyman for a garage door pro.
Never adjust the springs or cables yourself: they hold enough force to injure.
What you need
- A short piece of wood, laid flat
- A broom
Call a pro if
- It doesn't reverse on the board or for the broom
- It's noisy, jerks, or one side hangs lower
- A spring or a cable looks broken or loose

Handyman says: Don't use it. I'll book a door pro.
Free for every home. Handyman asks a few questions, then books a pro it trusts.
