Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. Twist or lift the tub's stopper out of the drain. A shower drain's cover unscrews, or pries up with a flat screwdriver.

  2. Hook out the hair and soap gunk with a gloved finger or a plastic drain snake, and put it in the trash, not down the drain.

Skip chemical drain cleaners: they can burn skin and eyes.
  3. Wipe the hair and scum off the stopper or the cover, and rinse it.

  4. Run hot water down the drain for a minute or two. It should swirl away without standing.

  5. Fit the stopper or the cover back the way it came out.

  6. If it still drains slowly, or other drains are slow too, ask Handyman for a plumber.

What you need

Call a pro if
