6 steps

Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. Switch the fan off, then turn off its breaker so it can't start while your hand is near it.

Never reach into a fan that has power.
  2. Pull the grille down a little, squeeze its two wire springs together and lift them out of their slots.

  3. Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and let it dry.

  4. Brush the dust off the fan wheel and vacuum out the housing. Wipe the blades gently, without bending them.

  5. Squeeze the springs into their slots and push the grille up flat.

  6. Turn the breaker back on and run the fan. Hold a square of toilet paper under it: a working fan holds it up.
