7 steps

Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. Open the window. Vacuum the grit out of its tracks with a crevice tool.

  2. Loosen the grime in the corners with an old toothbrush and a little soapy water, then vacuum again.

  3. Find the small slots at the bottom of the frame. Push a pipe cleaner gently through each one.

  4. Pour a cup of water into the track. It should drain out through the weep holes. Water that stays means one is still blocked.

  5. Wash with warm soapy water and a sponge, then squeegee from the top down, wiping the blade after each stroke.

Outside, ground floor only, from the ground. Outside glass upstairs is a pro's job.
  6. Wipe the sill and the frame dry, and close the window.

  7. Water pools in the track and won't drain, or you see stains or soft wood under the window: ask Handyman for a window pro.
