6 steps

Tap a step to watch it again.

  1. Choose the lowest floor you spend time on, like a finished basement or a ground-floor bedroom. Not a kitchen, bathroom or laundry room.

  2. Open the kit and set it where its instructions say: off the floor, and away from windows, vents, outside walls and heat.

  3. Write the start date and time on the kit's form.

  4. Leave it untouched for as long as the kit says. A long test over the heating season gives the truest picture.

  5. When the time is up, seal it, write the end date and time, and mail it to the lab right away.

  6. A high result means a radon mitigation pro, who seals and vents the house. Ask Handyman, and test again after the work or any big renovation.

What you need

  • A radon test kit, short or long term
  • A pen

Call a pro if

  • The lab's result is high
  • You're finishing or renovating the basement
  • You have a radon fan and want it checked

Handyman says: High result? I'll find a radon pro.

Free for every home. Handyman asks a few questions, then books a pro it trusts.
