Find the date it was made, on its label or stamped on the bottom. Replace it by the date its maker gives, or after any use.
A plastic head usually means it's disposable: replace it. A metal head with a service tag can be refilled by a fire-equipment shop.
Buy one with the same rating as the old one. A multi-purpose one suits most homes.
Hang it on the bracket near a way out, and check its needle is in the green.
Take the old one to a household hazardous waste drop-off, or ask your fire department. Don't put it in the trash.
Refilling, servicing and pressure tests are a fire-equipment pro's job. Ask Handyman to find one.
